*Review* Severed by Julia Crane and Lizzy Ford

Julia Crane is a familiar author for me, drawing me in with her creative characters.
Lizzy Ford is a big name and yet I sadly had not picked something by her up before.
This event and book was an amazing continuation of my love for one author and
the start of my love for the other.

Two sisters with special gifts and an unbreakable bond ...

Cyena and Tyana were born to powerful parents who are among the ruling class on their planet. Their lives are pampered but isolated, constricted to the city walls in which they were born.

Fun loving with a rare but powerful mind power, Tyana is accustomed to being treated like a princess and using her influence to get anything she wants – including protecting her sister from the elders and students who look down on her. The opposite of Tyana in most ways, Cyena’s second-class mind skills make others view her as a blemish on the family bloodline. No one but her sister believes in her.

They don’t know that a war is brewing, until it erupts. A class war tears their perfect world a part, leaving them helpless, alone and worse –severed from one another.

Each girl will risk her life to find the other, and each will be challenged to hone her powers in order to survive environments unlike any they’ve ever experienced.

I have been a fan of Julia Crane ever since I picked up Coexist awhile back.  That series made me want to read anything and everything that Crane wrote.  However, I had never read anything by Lizzy Ford and as it turns out these two ladies together are amazing.  Though this will be a quick review, it is not due to a lack of love but a lack of size.  What I didn't realize when I started this was that it was only a short 59 pages.  Yes, I was teased.

Severed was a quick moving story to say the least.  You are thrust into Cyena's turmoil and world that is less than desirable because of her lack in first class mind skills.  There is no doubt right from the start that this girl understands, what it is like to be treated like less than you are.  Where when you meet Tyana you see what it is like to have expectations that are higher than you wish.  Each girl a completely different side of the coin and it makes everything a blur of importance, hopes and heart breaks.  Not to mention the twists that are added in so skillfully in such a short time.

The girls though very different, each face problems of equal importance.  Cyena seems to have no choice because everyone is so concerned about seeing her into a marriage (happy or not) because she is not showing the potential that her bloodline should be.  Although she has tested for two skills, which is not usual but that is not enough to give her a say in her life.  I actually liked her and loved her in her strength to do what is needed but irritated in her weakness not to fight for what she wants.  With Tyana, you have a girl that wants choices and has the power to grab them but at the same time does not.  With her skill there are high expectations from everyone. She can't love who she wants, bloodlines are everything.  I just wanted her to tell everyone off and do as she wished because she had the power but I guess society can do this to you.

This was quick from start to finish, but it had an impact.  There was also a heart wrenching loss for such a short read.  This I did not expect... I mean how do you impact the reader with such a feeling of loss in such a short read.  You have authors that have the writing ability to develop enough emotion and attachment to the characters in that short read and Crane and Ford did it with power.  If you want a read that you can start and finish in one quick sitting that is fun and powerful, this is your pick.
